What is biogas? Write in brief about the production process.

Biogas, an eco-friendly renewable energy, results from breaking down organic matter like food scraps and animal waste. It can power vehicles, heat homes, and generate electricity.

Anaerobic digestion encompasses the following processes:

i. Hydrolysis or solubilization:

Clostridium and Pseudomonas, as anaerobic hydrolyzing bacteria, break down carbohydrates into simple sugars, proteins into amino acids, and lipids into fatty acids.

ii. Acidogenesis:

Anaerobic bacteria, both facultative and obligate, transform uncomplicated organic compounds into acids such as formic acid and acetic acid, along with the production of hydrogen (H2) and carbon dioxide (CO2).

iii.Methanogenesis:

Methanogenic bacteria such as Methanobacterium and Methanococcus transform acetate, H2, and CO2 into methane, CO2, H2O, and various byproducts through anaerobic processes.

12 mol CH3 COOH → 12CH4 + 12CO2 4mol H.COOH → CH4 + 3CO2 + 2H2 O CO2 + 4H2 → CH4 + 2H2 O.
